DE GRUY SCORES HAT TRICK AS FC BLANKS KELLAM IN GIRLS SOCCER

First Colonial's Catherine de Gruy had a hat trick and two assists as the Patriots, South Hampton Roads' third-ranked girls soccer team, blanked 10th-ranked Kellam, 7-0, Friday night in Beach District action.

With the victory, First Colonial improved to 3-0 in the Beach, 5-2 overall. Kellam fell to 1-2, 5-3.

De Gruy opened the scoring at the 31:24 mark when she took a pass from Krissy Castle and laid the ball into the center of the goal just past Knights keeper Autumn Thompson.

Nine minutes later, Castle managed to slip another by Thompson, who made 20 saves on a busy night. First Colonial outshot the Knights, 36-10.

Patriot keepers Katie Bolcar and Jenny Fentress combined for six saves.

``She did really well coming out to prevent a lot of their shots,'' de Gruy said.

``We thought Kellam was going to be really tough and we didn't want to take them lightly. We were working on our passes and we really hustled to the ball and beat them a lot.''

Avery Willis gave the Patriots their third goal of the game at the 15:47 mark and de Gruy assisted Tara Refo for another as First Colonial took a 4-0 halftime lead.

But de Gruy's work wasn't finished.

She converted a Laura La Roche cross at the 29:52 mark and assisted La Roche 13 minutes later to complete a corner opportunity.

A minute and a half later, de Gruy tapped in Hope Breckenridge's missed shot to wrap up the Patriots' scoring.

``She's one intense team player,'' First Colonial coach Janet Rowlands said. ``She'll give it away when she has to and take the shot when she needs to.''

The Knights played on their side of the field for only six minutes in the second half, attempted just two shots.

Bolcar, aggressively pursuing the ball out of the box, kept the Knights' scoring opportunities minimal.

``We were building the offense around the defense,'' de Gruy said. ``Katie did really well coming out to prevent a lot of their shots.''

Added Rowlands: ``I don't have a No. 1, 2, or 3 player. It's a complete effort and I think that's what's going to help us in the long run.'' by CNB
