2 AREA PLAYERS TO COMPETE IN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Lynnette Sheridan and Tom Otley will compete in the American Pool League/Camel 8 Ball National Championships in St. Louis beginning Thursday.

The two South Hampton Roads players qualified in a regional tournament and will enjoy an all-expenses paid trip. At the nationals, they will compete for their share of the $250,000 purse.

Sheridan of Virginia Beach plays for the High Rollers at Q Masters, while Otley of Norfolk plays for Clancy's Crew. Otley won his regional title and is also a member of the Amateur Pool Players Association advisory board.

Larry Tucket and Mike Chenault - both of Newport News - were the other area players to qualify.

All are members of the American Poolplayers Association.

Vegas bound: Two Virginia Beach singles players will join area teams from Miss Kitty's and the Brass Bell in the Billiard Congress of American nationals May 12-20 in Las Vegas.

Norman Deitz and Scott Pulley qualified as singles players by winning their divisions in tournament last month at Pockets.

With their victories, they become the first Amateur Pool Players Association members to win such a trip.

The BCA nationals will feature team, Scotch doubles and singles competition.

APPA champs: The APPA recently held its spring team grand championships with 18 teams consisting of more than 100 players competing over three days at eight locations around South Hampton Roads.

Capturing the crown was the Pocket Billiards Pocket Rackabeers with team members J.R. Ruggiero, Tony Quigg, Bill Mason, Heath Parker and John Ruggiero.

The Port Norfolk Pub took second, followed by Scully's Swingin' Johnsons and Q-Master 11 Players.

Divisional winners: Following are recent APPA division winners:

Monday - Team, Pockets Wild Bunch; individual, Bob Neary of Pockets.

Wednesday Division 1 - Team, Brass Bell; individual, Jack Davis of Brass Bell.

Wednesday Division 2 - Team, Ghent Inn Pigeons; individual, Tom Conner of Ghent Inn.

Sunday Division 1 - Team, Q Masters 2 Players; individual, Scott Pulley of Q Masters 2 Players.

Sunday Division 2 - Team, Pockets High Rollers; individual, Terry Smith of Pockets High Rollers.

Sunday Division 3 - Team, Wings Garden; individual, Joe Whitehurst of the End Zone.

150 club: Smokin' Joes, Pockets Wild Bunch and Pockets Spunky have all registered perfect 150 match scores in the past month.

April 30 - APPA women's singles championships, 12:30 p.m. at Pockets.
