On a hot and humid day at Darling Stadium, it was only fitting that a track star named Waters would shine under a merciless sun at the Peninsula Relays.

Jason Waters, a senior at Deep Creek, was named the meet's most outstanding player for the boys as he finished first in the 110 meter hurdles, the long jump, the intermediate hurdles and was second in the triple jump.

His time of 14.1 in the 110 meter hurdles set broke the meet record of 14.3. It also is an area best.

Waters, who says that he likes to run in the warmer weather, was hampered by a bruised heel throughout the meet. He was wearing a padded shoe for protection.

``It (his heel) bothered me a little bit, but I am real happy with my performance,'' Waters said. ``Coming into the relays I thought that Lassiter (Seneca) would get it, but he pulled his hamstring.''

Deep Creek's 400 meter relay team of Dee Harrell, Lawrence Claiborne, Damone Perry and William Eason broke the relay record of 41.9 with a time of 41.8. Their time is also an area best.

Churchland star Greg Boothe tied the meet record of 10.5 in the 100 meters. He also won the 200 meter with a time of 21.9. He broke his area best time of 10.6.

``It was a real nice day to run and I had a good warm-up,'' Booth said. ``I wanted to be real loose to race. I am happy that I ran well, but I thought that I would do better.''

Nansemond River's Keith Mayfield also set a meet record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.2, breaking the record of 51.5. Mayfield had no idea that he had done so well.

``I just wanted to beat Lakeland,'' Mayfield said. ``I am only a sophomore and I feel all right about the way I raced even though I didn't feel too well.''

For the girls, Kempsville's Adrienne Parker raced one of her best races. She won the 1600 meter with a time of 5:12, an area best.

Parker had a time of 5:22 in the 1600 and has an area best in the 800 at 2:26.

Bayside's Lashonda Cutchin took the tape in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.4. She also combined with Twilight Pope, Tomeka Williams, and Michelle Thompson to win the 400 meter relay with a time of 47.3.

Shnaka Walker of Lake Taylor set a relay record in the 200 meter with a time of 25.5 breaking the old record of 25.6. Walker, who was ill after running, said she felt dehydrated when she ran.

``My throat felt very dry,'' Walker said. ``I thought that Tomeka Wiliams of Bayside was going to beat me. We ran together on the summer track team. I am just glad that I won.'' by CNB
