The Norfolk Tides saw a much different club Saturday in the Toledo Mud Hens, who took a 7-0 victory at Ned Skeldon Stadium.
After being held to two hits and a run by Paul Byrd on Friday, Toledo got season-best hitting and pitching efforts in this one. The Mud Hens generated 11 hits, and lefthander Randy Marshall answered Byrd with a three-hit, complete-game shutout.
So dominant was Marshall, who threw 71 of 105 pitches for strikes, that no Norfolk runner reached third base.
``I guess you could say that I returned the favor,'' said Marshall, who struck out five and walked none. ``It was just one of those things with the guys that it was only a matter of time before they started scoring some runs. I think we've got a pretty decent hitting team.''
Marshall (1-0) was an International League all-star with the Tides in 1992. He totally reversed himself, however, in 1993 and was released. But this season, he has yet to allow a run in 22 innings and has surrendered only 14 hits and one walk. Toledo lost each of his previous two starts, both by 2-1 counts to Pawtucket.
The victory put the Hens (7-4) back into a first-place tie with Norfolk (9-6) in the West Division.
``He kept the ball in the ballpark,'' Tides manager Toby Harrah said. ``We hit a lot of balls right at people. Right now we're not as good a team as we were a few days ago.''
Hens shortstop Jim Givens got things rolling off Tides starter Dave Telgheder in a three-run third inning with a one-out double. He came home on Justin Mashore's single.
Steve Hecht ripped a double just inside the rightfield line that moved Mashore to third, and both runners scored on Craig Wilson's sacrifice fly. Tides rightfielder Chris Jones tried to get Mashore at the plate, and when catcher Alberto Castillo's subsequent throw to third was wild, Hecht trotted in for a 3-0 lead.
Telgheder found more trouble in the fourth when Toledo rightfielder Derrick White led off with a home run. Telgheder left in the fifth after a one-out double by Wilson scored Givens, who led off the inning with a single.
Toledo added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings.
The teams finish a three-game series today at 2 o'clock with the Tides' Mike Birkbeck (2-1) starting against Tommy Kramer (0-0). by CNB
