MAN DIES IN WRECK

One man died early Sunday when the car he was driving went out of control and slammed into a tree.

Donald Gwaltney Jr. of the 800 block of Buck St., who worked for the Norfolk Southern railroad, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident occurred at 12:30 a.m. in the 2200 block of S. Military Highway between Campostella Road and the South Norfolk bypass.

Police said Gwaltney was heading west at high speed when the 1985 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 he was driving went off the road and onto the highway median. It then cut back across the westbound lanes and went off the road and into a stand of trees.
