While working at a nuclear waste plant in Springville, New York, Cindy Shea has had to deal with plenty of explosive situations.
But Sunday, there was no chance for a meltdown in her game.
Shea bowled a 238 in the final game to win the Ladies Professional Bowlers Tour Northeast Region Tournament at the Norfolk Naval Air Station.
Shea, who was fourthheading into the final game, looked on as leader Leslie Livesay struggled to match her pin for pin.
Livesay, a Portsmouth amateur and the tournament's youngest bowler at 19, had a spare in the ninth frame that dropped her to second and made Shea $1,300 richer.
``I just don't believe,'' said Shea, who has never won a region tournament. ``All I kept hearing was cheers (for Livesay). I didn't think I had it. I didn't want to know.''
But Livesay knew.
``I looked over and saw she had a nice string going on,'' said Livesay, who was playing in her first professional tournament. ``I shouldn't have looked. When I saw (LPBT director) Charlie Allen give her a hug, I knew it was over.''
Shea then raced to phone her Mom, who usually accompanies her to tournaments.
Shea, who qualified for a free entry in the Sam's Town tournament in Las Vegas as the Northeast Region winner, said her Mom will be right beside her. by CNB
