MARGARET JAMES BOOKER

Margaret James Booker, age 80, of Wytheville, Va., formerly of Chesapeake, Va. died on Tuesday, April 18, 1995, in Wytheville. She was born Oct. 21, 1914 in White Stone, Lancaster County, Va., the daughter of the late Wilbert T. James Sr. and Elizabeth Hathaway James.

She earned a B.S. degree at Harrisonburg Teachers' College and taught at Wicomico High School in Wicomico, Va. Later she became a remedial reading tutor in Chesapeake.

Among her activities were service on the Mental Health Board, the American Lung Association, the Library Board and the Tidewater Community College Board. She served on the Chesapeake School Board for 16 years and was chairman of that organization for six years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional society for women educators, and of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Stuart Chapter.

In 1973 she was chosen First Citizen of Chesapeake. In the same year she was chosen Woman of the Year by the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1988 she was named Mother of the Year by the Chesapeake Ruritan Club. A lifetime Baptist, she taught Sunday School and was active in church and mission affairs.

Survivors include her husband, James Judson Booker Jr.; a son, James Judson Booker III, M.D.; a daughter, Elizabeth Booker Wilson of Richmond, Va.; and three grandchildren, Margaret Booker Sproule of Anderson, S.C., James Judson Booker IV and David John Wilson Jr., both of Richmond. Three nephews also survive, W.T. James III of White Stone, Va., Frederick Downing of Lottsburg, Va., and William H. Downing of Nassawaddox, Va.

A service was held at Farnham Baptist Church in Farnham, Va., on Friday April 21, 1995 at 2 p.m. Mr. Vivian Wheoler conducted the service. Memorials may be made to the American Bible Society or a favorite charity.
