Virginia Military Institute cadets clean a canal lock along the Ben
Salem Wayside in Rockbridge County Sunday. The cleanup was a public
service project at VMI. The most ambitious part of the project is
being undertaken where the Maury and James rivers meet. Organizers
want to create Frank Padget Memorial Park for a slave who died in
1854 while saving 40 people in a boating accident.
