The future role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization will be debated by students from six high schools tonight as part of the 42nd International Azalea Festival.
NATO was formed by the United States, Britain and other western European countries to provide a joint defense against the former Soviet Union. But the communist threat passed with the breakup in 1991 of the Soviet Union, and NATO countries are faced with a tough question: What purpose can NATO serve?
Responding to that question and others at tonight's forum will be panelists from Maury, Granby, Lake Taylor, Norview, Booker T. Washington and Norfolk Collegiate high schools. Staff officers from the Supreme Allied Command Atlantic, headquartered in Norfolk, have helped prepare and guide the teams.
The forum is at 7 p.m. in the Hofheimer Theater at Virginia Wesleyan College. Admission is free and open to the public. by CNB
