Rumors that Smithfield Medical Center has been sold are unfounded, says Dr. Bernard Jamison, one of the center's owners.
``Nothing has been sold, . . . and we are not for sale,'' Jamison said early this week.
However, Jamison said three of Hampton Roads' largest hospital companies - Obici, Riverside and Sentara - have approached Smithfield Medical several times over the past seven years about entering into joint working relationships.
``It's becoming more difficult to manage a practice today . . . and I think it's inevitable that some change will be made in the next year,'' Jamison said. ``But nothing has been done yet.
``If we do decide to do something, it will make absolutely no difference in the services we provide to patients.''
He wouldn't elaborate on what sort of relationship the center's owners might consider with another medical company.
