Pier fishing on the northern beaches continued to improve Tuesday as good numbers of nice-sized sea mullet moved into the area.
Pier anglers also caught toadfish, sand perch and small spot. In addition to small bottom fish, anglers on Kitty Hawk pier reported a run of keeper gray trout and a few speckled trout during the morning. The fish were landed on a variety of soft plastic artificial lures.
Pier fishermen on Hatteras Island caught small spot, small trout, croaker, toadfish and sea mullet.
Surf anglers along the northern beaches landed small bottom fish and a few tailor bluefish.
On Hatteras Island, sea mullet were taken near ramp 34 each and along the beach south of Cape Point. Drum fishing at Cape Point was slow Monday night, with only a few puppy drum landed.
During the day, Cape Point anglers caught some sea mullet, flounder and two big bluefish.
Yellowfin tuna fishing was great Tuesday, with almost everyone catching his limit of 30- to 50-pounders early in the day. Some nice gaffer dolphin also were taken.
Commercial beach haul seine catches of speckled trout in the area have been good recently.
Clearing water conditions along the Kitty Hawk to Nags Head beaches should result in some trout action for the recreational surf anglers.
The water temperature at the Army Crops of Engineers Pier was 55 degrees. by CNB
