LOCAL CELEBRITIES DISH IT OUT TO SERVE YOU - AND CHARITY

GLORIA WEBB IS a public servant who will serve you.

In fact, the mayor of Portsmouth is one of more than 100 local celebrities who will work in Hampton Roads' restaurants from 6 to 9:30 tonight to raise funds for the Hampton Roads Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse.

For this 13th Celebrity Night, all tips and a portion of the proceeds will go toward the committee's advocacy resources and public education programs.

All you have to do is dine at one of the participating restaurants.

Webb will be at Amory's Wharf in Portsmouth. News anchors Ed Hughes and Jane Gardner of WTKR-TV will be at La Galleria in Norfolk. Jeff Allen and Gigi Young of radio station WAFX, 106.9 FM, will spin plates instead of CDs at Five-01 City Grill in Virginia Beach. Jonathan Costan, Jimmy Ray Dunn, and Bonita Billingsly from WVEC-TV will be at Darryl's in Chesapeake.

Some other participating restaurants are Uncle Louie's in Norfolk, Aberdeen Barn and the Raven in Virginia Beach, and Kelly's Tavern in Chesapeake.

For more information, call 625-3182.

Norfolk living

If you can find an April issue of Southern Living magazine, turn to page 13 for a portrait of Magnolia Steak in Norfolk's Ghent.

Already mentioned in the magazine's December issue, Magnolia is featured in the spring article ``Where the Steaks Are High,'' along with beef venues in half-a-dozen other Southern cities.

``If you're going to dinner with a diverse group,'' writes Dana Adkins Campbell, ``there's something here for everyone.''

We stopped in at lunchtime recently for home-cooked barbecue, thickly sliced beef brisket and thinly pulled pork sandwiches with lots of gloppy but tasty thin-sliced slaw on the side to add to the bun or not.

Stake your claim at Magnolia Steak, Colley Avenue and Princess Anne Road in Norfolk. Call 625-0400.

Society Sundays

Now open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays for brunch, Cafe Society, 1807 Mediterranean Ave. in Virginia Beach, features modern American cuisine on a selectively intriguing a la carte menu.

Every entree comes with a refreshing first course of grapefruit garnished with seasonal fruits and an assortment of homemade sweet breads, muffins and coffeecakes.

Salads are fresh and crisp (ours had asparagus and smoked salmon curls); pan-roasted yellowfin tuna rested on a slender mini-omelet threaded with carrots and zucchini. My companion devoured a couple of cheese-stuffed chili peppers with fresh ranchero sauce.

Longtime local chef Willie Moats cooks brunch, weekday lunch and Monday dinner; Steve Sulecki is the dinner chef for the menu of Southwestern, Southern and new-American meals.

Call 422-8774. Brunch reservations are accepted for parties of six or more. MEMO: Send restaurant news, along with your name and a daytime phone number,
