Derrick Bernard Spencer, 11, of Portsmouth, died April 16, 1995.
Derrick, a native of Lancaster County, was born March 11, 1984. He accepted Christ as his personal savior in April of 1987. He loved the Lord and loved to sing for Him. He was a member of Holy Tabernacle of God, Merry Point, Va., until 1987. He then joined Central Baptist Church of Portsmouth, where he was a faithful member and a participant in the Awana Bible Program. He attended the Central Baptist Church School from 1987-1992. In the Fall of 1992, he transferred to Churchland Academy, Portsmouth. He was a star patriot, honor student, and was selected to participate in the upcoming presentation of the ``The Opera.''
Derrick was very active in community sports. He played baseball and basketball. He joined the Boy Scouts and received many awards for his accomplishments.
Derrick enjoyed singing, fishing, collecting trading cards and pogs. Each year, he joyfully worked with the Holy Tabernacle Vacation Bible School. The light of his life showed clearly and he was loved by all.
Survivors include his parents, Bernard and Arlene Spencer; one sister, Crystal Yolanda; three brothers; Kevin and Steven, all of Portsmouth, and Michael Spencer of Baltimore, Md.; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Glendon Pinn of Lancaster, Va., and Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Thompson of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 22, 1995, in Lancaster, Va.
