Hatteras Island radio listeners soon will have a station to call their own.
The sounds of WYND will be be on the air within three months.
Coastal Broadcasting Co. Inc. has received Federal Communications Commission approval to build WYND, the first radio station licensed to Hatteras.
Coastal Broadcasting, which operates WNHW-Carolina 92 in Nags Head, will build a studio in Buxton for the 100,000-watt FM station at 97.1.
Company President Ken Mann said the station will broadcast from a 300-foot tower to be erected in the village. The station will have a city-grade signal for all of Hatteras Island, and probably for most of the northern Outer Banks.
WYND will provide one of the few strong signals to reach residents on the lower end of Hatteras Island, Mann said. The station initially will simulcast WNHW's country format but will have the capability to generate original programming.
``It's there to serve the community,'' Mann says. ``The station will certainly do local news and Cape Hatteras School sports.''
The new station will maintain a full-time staff of three. Like any new business, the station will help stimulate the economy.
``This station will bring new dollars into the community,'' Mann said. ``We expect, because of our signal, to get regional advertising, which is handled by agencies outside the area.''
WYND will become the third local 100,000-watt radio station, joining WCXL in Kill Devil Hills and WRSF, a Columbia station whose studio is in Nags Head. WOBR, at 25,000 watts, and WVOD, at 50,000 watts, also are licensed to Dare County.
With the startup of WYND, Coastal Broadcasting will become the first company to own two FM stations on the Outer Banks. by CNB
