Regarding your article, ``Oklahomans embrace Virginia crew'' (news, April 23): Being a good neighbor, making a stranger feel welcome and being nice is nothing new to the people of Oklahoma.
Think of all the times tornadoes have struck and how these people rallied to help one another.
Back in the 1950s, like a lot of Navy airdales of that time, I was sent to the Airman Preparatory School in Norman, Oklahoma. There I had the privilege of meeting some of those folks. I was invited into their homes for dinner, offered rides while just standing by the road and made to feel welcome.
It is apparent that this generation has inherited the same fine qualities I found there many years ago. Calling that area ``The Heartland'' is well-founded; they do have big hearts.
