JAMES A. WHITEHURST SR.

James Augustus Whitehurst Sr., 87, of 179 McPherson Road, died Wednesday, April 26, 1995, in the Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

He was a native and lifelong resident of South Mills and a retired farmer. He was the last surviving Charter Director and past president of the Albemarle Electric Membership Corp. of Hertford, N.C.; a charter member and past president of South Mills Ruritan Club; retired Vice Chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Services of Camden County. He was a member and trustee of Sharon United Methodist Chuch of South Mills and one of its oldest members.

He was the son of the late Alonzo Wilson Whitehurst and Alice Virginia Whitehurst, and the husband of Mary Evelyn Kelly Whitehurst.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Loretta Whitehurst-Cutrell of Gates Co., and Barbara Howard Bernhard of Maryland; one son, James Augustus Whitehurst Jr. of South Mills; three sisters, Elizabeth Temple of the Newland section of Elizabeth City, Alice Swiggett of Danville, Va., and Minnie L. Whitehurst of Greenville, N.C.; two granddaughters, Scarlett Whitehurst Cutrell and Savannah Whithurst Cutrell, both of Gates Co.; three stepgranddaughters, Michele Wilkin of Florida, Dana Ford of Colorado, and Cheryl Saintcross of Maryland; one stepgrandson, Joseph H. Marcus of Maryland; and nine great-stepchildren.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Memory Gradens Cemetery by the Rev. Carolyn Smith and the Rev. Wallace Phillips. Twiford's Northside Chapel, 1115 N. Road St., Elizabth City, N.C. The family will be at the residence.
