The three terminals owned by the Virginia Port Authority handled a record number of cargo containers in March, Virginia International Terminals Inc. announced Thursday. The terminal operating company said that the terminals in Norfolk, Newport News and Portsmouth handled 47,775 containers in March, up from 39,185 in March 1994. About 667,000 tons of cargo moved through the terminals last month, up from 579,000 tons a year earlier. Vessel calls increased to 228 in March, up from 194 last year, thanks to the new steamship lines the port has attracted in the past year. by CNB
