Each day on my way to work, I pass a building that has become an eyesore to the Norfolk neighborhood in which it is situated. The owners have let it go beyond reason, and it is a shameful blight in an otherwise well-kept area.
I am not talking about someone's dilapidated home. I refer to the building that looks like a dirty UFO landed in our midst - Scope. The place is covered in grunge. Whether it's mildew, dirt or coal dust, I do not know. But I have never seen it look shabbier. On rainy days, it is an absolute slimy mess.
A building with such distinctive architecture is more conspicuous when it looks bad, like a large person wearing bad clothes.
The Hampton Coliseum sparkles with its new paint job and is a credit to its city. Scope in its present condition is an embarrassment to Norfolk. Let's either keep it clean or paint it battleship gray like Nauticus and get it over with.
