GROUND BREAKING SLATED FOR NEW CHILDREN'S CENTER THE FACILITY, IN FRANKLIN, WILL HONOR THE LATE TEXIE CAMP MARKS.

The Texie Camp Marks Children's Center will have a ground-breaking ceremony at 1 p.m. Thursday for its new facility at 700 Campbell Ave.

The Children's Center, a non-profit organization that works with disabled children and their families, was renamed two years ago to honor the late Marks, a Boykins benefactor and descendant of one of the founders of what is now Union Camp Corp. Marks died May 6, 1994.

One of her two sons, Paul Camp Marks, will speak on behalf of the family. Entertainment will be provided by the children from the Center's programs.

The facility, expected to cost about $1.1 million, is being built with donations from foundations, organizations, businesses and individuals. The Center has raised $945,000, and a community mail campaign is in progress.

The contractor, J.R. Wills & Sons Inc. of Suffolk, anticipates completion in late November.

The Children's Center, which was established in 1983, helps disabled children overcome their handicaps. The center offers day care for disabled and non-disabled children and early-intervention programs in cramped quarters at its headquarters on Third Avenue in Franklin.

Day care is also offered in Hunterdale and early-intervention programs are held in Suffolk.

In 1991, Paul D. Camp Community College donated 2 1/2 acres at the edge of its campus for a new facility to combine the Franklin and Hunterdale operations. The new building, which will have 14,000 square feet, will be able to serve 100 children.
