ART AND ARCHITECTURE TO BE CELEBRATED

Paint The Towne, a day to revel in the art and architecture of Olde Towne, will be held Saturday in downtown Portsmouth.

``It's an all-day, ongoing, drop-in-and-do-this kind of event,'' said Joyce LaFramboise, administrative assistant of the Portsmouth Museums.

Local artists will paint portraits of the architecture of Olde Towne in the area around North Street, Court Street, Crawford Parkway and London Boulevard.

``This is a first-time program,'' said LaFramboise. ``If it works well, we'll probably do it again.''

The event, conceived by the program committee of the Portsmouth Museums and the art departments of Portsmouth Public Schools, also includes the following activities:

Music: Portsmouth Public School students will perform music from 2 to 3 p.m. in the courtyard of the Arts Center, 420 High St., and the Louisiana Mudbugs will perform Cajun music on the water stage at Portside from 6 to 8 p.m.

Art: Mural of Olde Towne, on the former Bank of Virginia building at Washington and King streets, painted by art students at I.C. Norcom High School; art displayed at the Children's Museum of Virginia, 221 High St., by public school elementary students; art displayed in the storefronts of High Street by public school secondary students.

Video: ``Discovering Olde Towne,'' a film narrated by Bill Brown, curator of the Arts Center. Video shown at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the main library, 601 Court St.; the Arts Center, 420 High St., and the Portsmouth Convention and Visitors Bureau, 505 Crawford St.
