LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - SUFFOLK

Kicking out this class in disregard for family

I am a disappointed and upset citizen of Suffolk, particularly in relation to the Department of Parks and Recreation.

My son and I have been students of Parks and Recreation-sponsored Tae Kwon Do and have found the class very enjoyable for many reasons. There has been a wide age range, and parents with their children have been able to share a city-sponsored activity together. Instructors, Woody and Gloria Crook, as well as others, make you feel like family.

It is obvious to us that Parks and Recreation has something against this class. I was informed it wasn't ``cost effective.'' I find this hard to believe, since this and the aerobics class are their largest classes. That excuse is weak at best.

It was real nice for Suffolk to sponsor a class in which the family could participate. It is a shame that they want to end the class.

Just when my family was beginning to believe the City of Suffolk was becoming family oriented, this happens. It would be nice if we had family-oriented people working for Parks and Recreation who care about our children and families.

Suffolk Library `passport' should be supported

Ida Kay Jordan's article on the regional library system should be of considerable interest to citizens of all four cities.

While I don't think we will see a regional library system anytime soon, I am happy to report that the public library section of the Virginia Library Association and the Friends of Virginia Libraries are working on a program called ``The Virginia Passport,'' which will act as a library card for any residents of Virginia to use at any participating library across the state.

I would like to urge any and all interested readers to join their local ``Friends of the Library'' group and to add their support to this program.

Saddlehorn Drive ABC ad criticized

I think is is a disgrace to our system that is fighting drug and alcohol abuse for the state of Virginia to carry a half-page ad in all the widely circulated newspapers across the state.

They have the large state ABC Board logo under the ad and then in small print it says: ``paid by individual liquor distributors.''

In my years as a practicing alcoholic, I knew where the ABC stores were and all the bootleggers.

I am sure this money could be put to a much better cause - mainly drug and alcohol abuse prevention.

Our city and state has enough problems without further ruining the state's image.
