Firefighters thought everyone was out of the boardinghouse in the 600 block 40th St. The building was damaged by fire on April 24.
But Saturday, five days after the fire, a worker discovered a body on the third floor of the building.
``The entire situation is being investigated'' by the fire department and police, said Fire Marshal R.L. Ware Jr.
The man's name is being withheld until authorities can notify his family.
The fire apparently was accidental, caused by a resident who nodded off while food was cooking on the stove, said Ware. While fighting the blaze, workers twice pulled together the 20 or so boardinghouse residents, Ware said. The rescuers were led to believe everyone was accounted for, he said. No one reported the man missing in the days after the fire.
A worker visiting the scene stumbled upon the man, who apparently had kdied in his room, Ware said.
