INVESTIGATORS' INTERVIEW OF GOBLE IS BLOCKED

Ohio investigators who wanted to interview a North Carolina truck driver being investigated in a series of slayings of women had no luck.

The investigators went to Tennessee last week to interview Sean Patrick Goble about the deaths of two Ohio women.

Goble's lawyers blocked the interview, Licking County Sheriff's Capt. Raymond Back said Friday. Back is part of the Ohio Interstate Homicide Task Force.

One of the two women was former Columbus resident Alice Rebecca Hanes, 36, whose body was found in Tennessee in March. Hanes had an extensive record of prostitution, officials said.

Goble, of Asheboro, was arrested two weeks ago at the trucking company that employed him in Winston-Salem, N.C., and is being held by authorities in that state.

Investigators want to question Goble about dozens of slayings in 10 states. Many of the victims were prostitutes who were smothered or strangled and left alongside major highways.

He is charged in Hanes' death and also faces charges in the death of a 45-year-old Bloomington, Ind., woman whose body was dumped in Virginia and another woman whose body was found along Interstate 40 in North Carolina.

Ohio investigators are focusing on Goble's movements during the past several years to determine whether he could have killed two women in Ohio in 1990, Back said.

The two cases are among eight the task force considers active and possibly related, Licking County Sheriff Gerry Billy has said. The cases date to 1980.

One victim, a 25- to 35-year-old woman, remains unidentified. Her body was found on April 19, 1990, behind a truck stop near Interstate 70 and Ohio 37 in Licking County.

The other Ohio case is that of Kathryn Hill, 26, also known as Wendy Turner. Hill was found dead near I-280 in Wood County on Nov. 5, 1990.
