A potential state-record white perch and the season's first big Virginia dolphin highlighted weekend action.
The white perch weighed 2 pounds, 6 ounces, and was pulled from Lake Prince in Suffolk by Jim Roper of Portsmouth. Before being accepted as a record, the catch will have to be certified by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, official keeper of Virginia's freshwater records. The current record is 2 pounds, 1 ounce.
Al Paschall of Virginia Beach claimed the season's first citation award from the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament for a dolphin - the fish, not the mammal. It weighed 25 pounds and was taken from the boat Sea Horse, fishing off Virginia Beach.
Elsewhere, some outstanding shellcracker action developed at Western Branch reservoir in Suffolk, where weighmaster Dennis Helms of the lake fishing station estimated he saw ``at least 50'' citation-winning fish Saturday and Sunday. The biggest weighed 2 pounds, 9 ounces, and was caught by Charlie Kania of Suffolk.
