Thousands of people across the country will attend services and join hands in observance of the 44th annual National Day of Prayer on Thursday.
Locally, the day of prayer will be observed from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. at the Municipal Center's City Hall Building and from 7 to 7:40 p.m. at Mount Trashmore.
Religious denominations join to pray for the nation and its leaders, according to a news release issued by the National Day of Prayer Task Force based in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The National Day of Prayer was established in 1952, when Congress unanimously passed a joint resolution signed by President Harry Truman.
In 1988, Ronald Reagan amended the resolution and established the first Thursday in May as the official National Day of Prayer.
Locally, members of Foundry United Methodist Church, St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Providence Presbyterian Church, Community United Methodist Church and the Norfolk District of United Methodist Churches, all volunteered their services for the events.
Mount Trashmore - 7 p.m. The opening will be led by the Rev. James Mahaffey, accompanied by Beth Bridges leading the congregations in ``Seek Ye First.'' Prayers for the nation, state and community will be led by the Rev. James Mahaffey. Prayer for the family will be led by Jerre Burke. Prayer for the community and personal renewal will be led by the Rev. Ken Hicks.

Courthouse - Music and singing will begin at noon with short prayers by six Virginia Beach clergymen starting at 12:15 and lasting to 12:45 p.m. on the lawn of Building One of the City Hall complex.
