Happy with school system
I would like to thank Dr. J. Frank Sellew, assistant superintendent for Norfolk Public Schools, for providing me with the opportunity to discuss the deteriorating building conditions and proposed renovations of Bay View Elementary School.
His prompt response to my inquiries is very much appreciated. I enjoyed meeting with his committee to discuss solutions and recommendations for these problems and requested repairs. Norfolk School Board Chairman Ulysses Turner's genuine interest in resolving these immediate concerns was im-pres-sive.
I would like to commend the administrative staff and faculty of Bay View Elementary. I would also like to encourage the School Board to continue funding the Field Lighthouse Program located at the Stuart Gifted Center and the summer enrichment program.
I look forward to observing the recommended temporary repairs.

Edgewood Avenue What a performance!
Anyone with negative thoughts about the teens of today should have attended the Voices of Virginia Concert at Chrysler Hall.
The Governor's School Performing Arts Department sponsored the overwhelming abundance of talent that these bright, energetic and focused young adults displayed. Watching this enthusiastic, happy group restores hope and faith in tomorrow's generation.

North Lexan Crescent Trio of officers praised
The family of Mr. Robert Shields sincerely acknowledges Cpl. K.L. Boone, Detective W.Q. Marileo and Detective D.L Jordan for their courtesy, professionalism and dedication to their assigned tasks.
Mr. Shields was reported missing at approximately 3:30 p.m. on April 17. Because of the expeditious manner in which this matter was handled, Mr. Shields was returned to his home at 1 p.m. on April 19.
The family is convinced that the life of Mr. Shields, who is undergoing dialysis treatments three times weekly, was in jeopardy because he was not receiving dialysis and other prescribed medications.

Ivy Crescent Rezoning nonsense
On April 11, the Norfolk City Council approved a request by Ronald Boone Jr. to rezone a parcel of land at 9710 Chesapeake St. in Ocean View from residential to commercial. The vote was 4-3 in favor, with Mayor Paul D. Fraim casting the deciding vote.
When I bid on a lot in a public auction conducted and sanctioned by the NRHA in February 1990, I knew that the lot I bid on used to be a part of the Ocean View Amusement Park. I was assured that the area had been rezoned residential as part of the city's new master plan for Ocean View.
Because of this guarantee, I invested approximately $400,000 to build my ``dream house'' on the beach in Pinewell-By-The-Bay. Now it seems that residential areas next to my home will be rezoned to commercial in order to allow the operation of a jet-ski facility.
After putting my money where everybody else's mouth was, I am now going to be living in the middle of an amusement park.
I guess all of the city's guarantees, master plans and environmental impact studies mean nothing when certain people control economic strings.
Thank you, Norfolk, NHRA and City Council for establishing a precedent for spot commercial zoning, for creating hazards for public beach swimmers and for threatening the migration of wildlife on the Bay. Thank you also for irritating noise pollution and jeopardizing the success of Norfolk's overall plan to restructure Ocean View.
Along with exclusive site rights given by the NRHA for Pinewell-By-The-Bay and Bay Oaks Place, the Boone family can now add a jet-ski facility. Congratulations!
