Norfolk's acting director of the Department of Human Services, Suzanne Puryear, has been appointed to the permanent position by City Manager James B. Oliver.
Puryear will lead the department, which oversees social services, during the critical time of welfare reform by Gov. George Allen and the legislature over the next few years. Puryear now serves on the state's Task Force for Welfare Reform Implementation.
The Norfolk Human Services Department has a staff of approximately 600. Before becoming acting director, Puryear served as the assistant director, and then director, of the Norfolk Division of Social Services. She began her career as an eligibility worker in Norfolk.
She holds a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in public administration from Old Dominion University.
Puryear takes over from George G. Musgrove, the last permanent director, who left to take a position as an assistant city manager with Richmond's municipal government. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
