COX-TALLWOOD SHOWDOWN TODAY

The Beach District boys soccer showdown between Cox and Tallwood was postponed Tuesday because of rain and will be made up today at Tallwood - with a twist.

The boys will play before the girls so that several Tallwood girls team members may attend cheerleading tryouts.

``And several of them are pretty good cheerleaders,'' Tallwood student activities coordinator Bruce Phelps said. ``When trying to reschedule the game, we told the folks at Cox that Thursday wasn't a good day for us because of cheerleading tryouts and it was their idea to flip-flop the games.''

Cox, 4-0-1 in the district, finds itself in the unfamiliar situation of not leading the race.

Salem - which opted to play in the rain Tuesday - has a half-game lead over First Colonial at 6-0. The Patriots are 5-0. The two are scheduled to meet Friday.

FOOTBALL SHOWCASE: The Beach District will once again hold a combine for college football coaches in which the district's best players will strut their stuff.

They call it the Virginia Beach Athletic Showcase, where players will run, jump and lift to the best of their abilities Tuesday afternoon at Ocean Lakes High.

This will be the sixth edition. But there could be a name change in the works.

The district's coaches are considering expanding the event to include all area players.

``The positives are we could help the rest of the area and more college coaches would likely come,'' said Ocean Lakes coach Jim Prince, who expects 50 coaches this year. ``(Tallwood coach) Kenny Barto and the rest of us have organized what we see as a first-class operation and the college coaches could do what I call one-stop shopping.

``The coaches could get done in three hours what would take them three days otherwise.''

The negative would be that there would be limits. Due to time constraints, each school would be asked to bring only five or so of its best players, and only rising seniors.

As for this year's combine, the top recruits appear to be wide receiver Plaxico Burress, defensive back Cedric Warren and lineman Ray Shupe, all from Green Run, Princess Anne running back Mike Majette, Tallwood defensive end Alvin Wilson and Ocean Lakes fullback Marcus Wilcox.

``If you break it down into terms of meat, that's the filet of the menu,'' Prince said.

NOTES: Wilson High's search for a boys basketball coach will begin immediately, according to athletic director Dave Willett. Willett estimated that the school would accept applications through May 22, adding that the school wants to make a decision before the end of the school year.
