It wasn't the usual Friday afternoon bowling scene at Pinboy's on Laskin Road recently.
For one thing, there was a white stretch limo parked outside.
There was also a long line of balloon bouquets decorating the scoring tables.
And, practically all of the lanes had been taken over by a small army of mostly middle-aged bowlers with beepers on their belts and cellular phones pressed intermittently to their ears.
They were the brokers, agents and support staff from five Long and Foster real estate offices and they were there for an important purpose.
By the time the afternoon was over the group had cleared $625 for the American Cancer Society.
``This is the first time I've been in a bowling alley in 15 years,'' Peggy Skinner of the Oceanfront office said as she presided over a table covered with score sheets, computer printouts, a long list of prizes donated by local businesses and a large stack of bright red T-shirts bearing the Long & Foster Hot Line logo.
It was Skinner who kept track of the computerized scores and passed on word of the winning team. Final scores were close, but the Oceanfront team conprised of Alan Bross, Paul Smoot, Wanda Vass and tournament organizer Pam Rogers came out on top.
As part of their prize three members of the winning team, along with their broker Betty Perkins, were taken by limousine to a post-tournament party at Ellington's.
The bowling tournament was only one of the cancer fund-raisers in which company employees have been involved. They also cleared $800 on a yard sale and lined up enough sponsors to field four teams in the Cancer Society's May 19 Relay for Life. ILLUSTRATION: Photo by JO-ANN CLEGG
