LIGHT WINDS HELP TO IMPROVE PIER FISHING

Fairly light winds and clearing water along the northern beaches helped to improve pier fishing Thursday.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught two- to three-pound speckled trout and tailor blues during most of the morning. Bucktails and Fin-S lures produced good catches.

Avalon Pier fishermen landed some gray and speckled trout and a few nice sea mullet.

Some tailor blues and trout were taken on Nags Head Pier.

Jennette's Pier reported trout, toadfish, small blues and good-sized mullet landed from the end of the pier.

Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught fair numbers of mullet, along with small spot and bluefish.

Pier fishing on Hatteras Island was slow. Rodanthe Pier and Avon Pier reported a few mullet taken. Frisco Pier anglers caught a few keeper flounder and small blues.

Action was slow for surf fishermen along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet because of heavy swells.

A few mullet and small blues were beached from Rodanthe to Buxton.

At Cape Point, drum were uncooperative Wednesday night. Thursday, fishing was mediocre at Cape Point and along the south beach, with only a few mullet and small blues taken.

Bluewater fishing southeast of Oregon Inlet was good Thursday, with yellowfin tuna and big dolphin plentiful.

One sailfish was released by the ``Fishin' Frenzy.''

Tuna fishing was good off Hatteras around the southeast rocks. Additionally, some nice-sized dolphin were taken, and white marlin were released, by the charter boats ``Tuna Duck'' and ``Release.'' Several blue marlin were lost after being hooked.

If the wind turns back to the southwest, anglers can expect good nighttime drum fishing at Cape Point. If not, look for a mixture of small bottom fish and blues to be caught all along the beach from Corolla to Hatteras Inlet.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck on Thursday was 56 degrees. by CNB
