Three former local athletes will be among six inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame tonight in the 24th annual induction banquet at Holiday Inn-Portside.
Charles ``Lefty'' Driesell, Dave Twardzik and the late Lily Harper Martin will be recognized for their athletic achievements in the state.
Driesell, a native of Norfolk and basketball standout at Granby High School and Duke University, is currently head basketball coach at James Madison University. Twardzik, director of player personnel for the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA, was a college basketball star at Old Dominion University and played professionally with the Virginia Squires of the ABA and Portland in the NBA.
Martin, the sister of golf professional Chandler Harper and a Portsmouth native, won seven women's State Amateur titles in golf.
Also to be inducted are Bill Chambers, a high school basketball star at E.C. Glass and a collegiate standout at William and Mary;, Frank Havens, a gold medal winner in the single blade canoeing event in the 1952 Olympics; and the late Albert Doran, a longtime coach at Lee and George Washington of Alexandria high schools.
A social hour will begin at 6 p.m.
