Maury High's Amy Mayer scored two goals and had two assists as the Commodores, South Hampton Roads' fifth-ranked team, blanked visiting Granby, 7-0, in a battle of Eastern District unbeatens.
Maury (8-4 overall) improved to 5-0 in the district while the Comets (5-2-2) fell to 4-1.
Mayer opened the scoring two minutes after kickoff, blasting a shot past Granby keeper Natalie Weatherburn into the center of the net.
A minute later, Shwante Snead netted another. Then at the 37-minute mark, Snead and Mayer teamed up to make it 3-0.
Mayer rounded out the first half scoring with a hard shot in the left side of the net past a diving Weatherburn, who had a busy day in the box, facing 34 shots to the three her Granby teammates managed.
Weatherburn made 11 saves on the day.
``You've got to keep your head up and your eyes open,'' Weatherburn said. ``It can get pretty stressful at times. We just need to get our heads together.''
The second half was no better for the Comets.
Mayer again started off the scoring two minutes in with a brisk shot in the right corner of the net assisted by Katie Roman.
``I think we worked really well together today,'' said Mayer, the Commodores' leading scorer. ``We had a lot of good passing.''
Her own included - Mayer picked up her second assist of the game when she dished to Roman, who beat Weatherburn to the right side of the goal with a leftfooted shot.
Janet Blevins wrapped up the Maury attack with 15 minutes to go, following up a Jessica Zimmerman attempt.
``We have a pretty potent front line,'' Maury coach Robert Mayer said.
``I think they showed they're in better shape than the other team was. We were pushing hard and we have to push hard with the regionals coming up.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo
