Interested in a new home? Members of the Tidewater Builders Association will be showing off their best efforts during the annual New Home Tour, from noon to 6 p.m. through May 14.
It's an opportunity to visit new neighborhoods from Virginia Beach to Suffolk, and to explore houses, condos and townhouses ranging from the pragmatic to the luxurious.
The self-guided tour is free and features 44 model homes. All will be staffed to answer visitors' questions. Many of the homes will be fully furnished and landscaped.
Co-sponsoring the event are Virginia Power, Virginia Natural Gas, NationsBank, General Electric, The Virginian-Pilot & The Ledger-Star and HW10, the 10-year-warranty service offered by the TBA.
In addition, many builders are offering incentives and giveaways to those who buy homes during the tour. These include free appliances, vacations, moving expenses and discounts on landscaping and other services.
``I think it presents a couple of opportunities to consumers,'' said Bert Reavis, president of Chesapeake Homes, who will have four houses on the tour.
``No. 1 is education. The better the buyers are the better we are going to be as builders. This tour allows someone who might be interested in buying to see the range of the marketplace and compare and contrast the style, quality, features and benefits of over 40 homes on display.''
Reavis plans to appear at each of his models, all in Chesapeake. ``I want to hear some very pointed questions,'' he said.
The tour shows off ``basically the best work of what I feel are the best builders in the area,'' said Edwin Brody, president of Sharlyn Construction Corp. ``It gives buyers an opportunity not to be under any pressure. They can just go out and look at different houses, different price ranges.''
Ginny Sancilio, president of Progressive Realty, stressed the incentives being offered home buyers who contract for a house during the Home Tour.
``They get bonus for buying during that time,'' she said. ``Its a buyer's advantage to come out these next two weekends.''
Sancilio said both inventory houses (already constructed) and to-be-built dwellings (from plans similar to the models) will be available. And some models themselves will be for sale. Progressive Realty is handling Courthouse Estates in Virginia Beach and River Pointe in Portsmouth.
