John Robert Ellis, 76, of the 4500 block of O'Kelly Drive, a self-employed farmer, died May 4, 1995, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
A native of Nansemond County, he was a member of Holy Neck United Church of Christ in Suffolk, where he was also a Deacon and a member of the Men's Bible Class. He was a former charter member of the Holy Neck-South Quay Ruritan Club. Mr. Ellis was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Fanney Ellis; a daughter, Joyce E. Overby of Harrisonburg, Va.; two sisters, Sarah Margaret Harrell and Ellen E. Adams, both of Suffolk; and three grandchildren, Michelle Overby, Heather Overby and Brian Ellis Overby. He was predeceased by his parents, Maggie Britton Ellis and Henry Lloyd Ellis.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Holy Neck United Church of Christ by the Rev. E. Cecil Smith. Burial will be in Holland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. today and suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Neck United Church of Christ, Memorial Fund, 7566 Quaker Drive, Suffolk, Va. 23437.
