FLOUNDERING FISHERMEN: The closing of North Carolina ports Sunday to the landing of flounder caught in the Atlantic Ocean by commercial fishermen has generated a great deal of confusion among area fishermen, according to the Division of Marine Fisheries.

Bruce L. Freeman, fisheries director, said in a press release Friday that he would like to stress the following points regarding this action:

This closure does not affect flounder caught by sports fishermen.

This closure only applies to flounder caught by commercial fishermen in the Atlantic Ocean.

Freeman said he closed the state's ports because North Carolina's commercial harvest quota for flounder was being rapidly depleted.

North Carolina ports are expected to reopen to the landing of flounder caught with commercial gear from the Atlantic Ocean this fall.

JONES ON TASK FORCE: Third District Congressman Walter B. Jones Jr. announced Friday that he has joined the House Republican Task Force on Agriculture. The panel, established to advise the Agriculture Committee and House Leadership on agricultural issues, will have a key role in shaping this year's farm bill.

``Getting a fair farm bill past an urban Congress will be a tough task,'' Jones said in a statement.

``Those of us who represent agricultural and rural areas must work together if we are to be successful.'' by CNB
