Landmark Communications Inc. said it plans a 24-hour Spanish-language cable-TV network devoted to travel. Norfolk-based Landmark said the new Travel Channel will be based in Miami and offer service in Mexico and Argentina by October. Landmark plans to translate the programming to Portuguese and enter Brazil with the channel in 1996. It said it will offer the channel to U.S. cable operators serving large Spanish-language populations.
The venture is the latest in a string of travel-related startups or for Landmark, whose interests also include The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star. (Staff) Virginia Power workers ratify new contract
Virginia Power said members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers have ratified a new three-year agreement with the utility, retroactive to April 1.
The contract, covering about 3,800 of Virginia Power's 10,700 employees, calls for wage increases of 3 percent in each of the first two years and 2.75 percent in the third. The union also agreed to some changes in rules that give the utility greater flexibility in assigning work. Linemen, mechanics, control-room operators and meter readers are among those covered. Eddie Bauer, the Redmond, Wash.-based cataloger and apparel-store chain, said it plans to open a new outlet in Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach. When the store opens in August, it will be the company's 10th Virginia store.
