Former Old Dominion women's basketball coach Marianne Stanley, who won three national titles in 10 seasons with the Lady Monarchs, has been named interim co-head coach of Stanford University.
Stanley and long-time Stanford assistant coach Amy Tucker will replace head coach Tara VanDerveer, who is leaving to coach the women's basketball national team.
Stanley, Stanford's promotions director for women's basketball last year, also coached at Penn and Southern Cal.
She led Southern Cal to a final eight NCAA tournament showing in 1992 but had a bitter parting with the school in 1993, when her contract wasn't renewed following the filing of a suit seeking pay comparable to the men's basketball coach at Southern Cal.
Southern Cal won a summary judgment in the case. Stanley has appealed the ruling to the Ninth U.S. Circuit of Appeals, but had been unable to land a head coaching job since.
Both moves become official Oct. 1, when VanDerveer resigns to begin her full-time commitment to USA Basketball, during which she will the oversee the women's national team. VanDerveer also will coach the 1996 Olympic squad, which will be drawn largely from the ranks of VanDerveer's elite national team.
VanDerveer's resignation is a technicality required under NCAA regulations. VanDerveer, who has guided Stanford to the Final Four four times in the 1990s, will return to the school following next year's Olympic competition at Atlanta.
Stanley will work as an administrative assistant for women's basketball until VanDerveer's departure. Her contract with Stanford expires upon VanDerveer's return.
Stanley is the nation's 19th-winningest women's coach with a 351-146 (.706) record. She compiled a 10-year mark of 269-59 (.820) at ODU, won the AIAW titles in 1979 and 1980 and the NCAA crown in 1985.
Stanley took over the Lady Monarch program in 1977-78 and ODU rolled to a 30-4 record and won the Women's NIT title. ODU was 35-1 in 1978-79 and 37-1 the following year.
Stanley coached a Naismith Award winner (Anne Donovan), two national layers of the Year (Donovan and Nancy Lieberman), and four Kodak All-Americans (Lieberman, Donovan, Inge Nissen and Medina Dixon). Her Lady Monarch teams won 30 or more games four times and won 20 or more eight times. by CNB
