The wrecking of Lawrence Stadium is not a pretty sight. Many longtime residents of Portsmouth understandably have been upset by the action.
For one thing, many of them have seen familiar parts of this city razed only to create unproductive vacant land. Other sites have been used for less than desirable buildings. Because the city really doesn't have enough money to build the new high school immediately, they envision a similar fate for the London Boulevard land.
High feelings about destruction will be allayed only if people see something positive going on. Even if the proposed school is not begun immediately, citizens need to see continuous work on the Vision 2005 development plan that encompasses this area.
We must move beyond destruction. We must build a first-rate community. We must attract new businesses that are first-class contributors, not only to the economy but to the community.
It's easy to tear down. Rebuilding is the tough job. But Portsmouth citizens have every right to expect the best to happen. by CNB
