COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK

Suffolk natives Johnnie Barnes and Terrance Warren are expected to be among the professional players on hand for a football fundamentals camp May 20 at Birdsong Recreation Center.

The event is jointly sponsored by Donald Hill of the Baltimore CFL football team and Suffolk Parks and Recreation.

Barnes, Warren and other NFL and CFL players will serve as camp counselors for the one-day event and provide individual position instruction. The two players starred at John F. Kennedy High and Hampton University before moving to the NFL. Warren now plays for the Seattle Seahawks; Barnes recently signed a free-agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers after two years with the San Diego Chargers.

Math, English and conflict resolution tutors will also be on hand for the camp, and posters, hats, T-Shirts and other Baltimore CFL football team items will be provided to all participants.

GOLF NEWS: The Portsmouth City Amateur golf tournament, which had been scheduled for May 13-14, is being rescheduled due to work at Sleepy Hole.

A tentative date of June 24-25 has been set.

The 36-hole event will be played at Sleepy Hole for the third straight year. J.P. Leigh, a Suffolk resident and a Portsmouth native, is the defending champion. Leigh won the 67th annual City Amateur with 151 last year. He edged Troy Ferris of Virginia Beach and Jeff Shield of the Eastern Shore by one shot. by CNB
