A joyous sense of community blossomed this week under the trees at Chesapeake City Park. Hundreds of volunteers of all ages, backgrounds and economic means focused their attention and resources on a common, worthwhile goal - to brighten the lives of children.
The result of their generosity is Fun Forest, a playground to beat all playgrounds.
Skilled builders and blue-thumbed novices, white-collar executives and no-collar laborers, tousle-haired youth and gray-haired grandparents pitched in to get the job done.
When a heavy timber needed to be lifted into place, nobody noticed whether the hands doing the lifting were men's or women's, black or white, manicured or calloused. What mattered was the work.
When a post hole needed digging or a tub of concrete needed mixing, nobody stood around waiting for someone else to do it. They bent to the task.
The spirit of these volunteers during these last few days and in the months of careful preparation that preceded them will be redeemed in the glee of children at play.
Everyone who participated can be proud of what they accomplished.
The kind of community where this sort of thing can happen is the kind of community we all want to live in.
