STATE SCHOOL BELL AWARD

Pamela McKinney, principal of Plaza Elementary School, was recently selected by the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals Board of Directors as a recipient of the ``School Bell Award.''

This award is given to principals who have made significant contributions to their schools and communities. McKinney was honored for implementing several key programs at Plaza. These include an after-school reading tutorial program, the ``Parent Notification Homework Hotline System'' and a model mentorship program for at-risk students.

Also, Kyle Larson, a kindergartner, was recently named the local winner of Reading Rainbow's ``Young Writers and Illustrators Awards Competition.'' His winning story was entitled ``There's a Mouse in My House.''
