Lonnie Lee Murphy, 96, loving father, grandfather and friend, went to be with Jesus on May 6, 1995. He died in his residence.
He retired in 1962 from Norfolk Naval Base as an electrician, was a retired farmer and a member of Charity United Methodist Church. Mr. Murphy had taught the young persons Sunday School Class and was an honorary member of the Official Board of the church and an honorary member of the United Methodist Men. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellow. He was the widower of Mittie Styron Murphy.
Survivors include two daughters, Velma M. Gregory, and Emily F. Davis and her husband Wayne G. Davis, and two sons, Floyd L. Murphy, and his wife, Helen Murphy, and Elroy Fleetwood Murphy and his wife, Lillie Murphy, all of Virginia Beach; 15 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren, Brittany, Karlee, Chance and Bailey. Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by two sons, George Gentry Murphy Sr. and Melvin Lonnie Murphy.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Charity United Methodist Church, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Tommy Markham. Burial will be in Charity United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will be at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 3 to 5 p.m. today to receive friends and will be at the residence other times. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Creeds Volunteer Fire Department or Charity United Methodist Church Vehicle Fund.
