ORVILLE A. SMULLEN JR.

Orville Alfred Smullen Jr., 77, of the 5200 block of Sweetbriar Circle, died May 6, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.

Mr. Smullen, a native of Baltimore, was retired in 1966 from the U.S. Navy as a Commander after 30 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and the Tidewater Chapter of U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II. He was the widower of Mary Christine Smullen.

Survivors include two daughters, Diane Franks and Katherine Conley, a son, Richard Smullen and a brother, Joseph Smullen, all of Portsmouth; a sister, Claire Monohan of Seattle, Wash.; and two grandchildren, Dawn Parker and Chad Parker, both of Portsmouth.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's Catholic Church by the Rev. Joseph Slowik. Entombment, with military honors, will be in Meadowbrook Mausoleum, Suffolk. A Submarine Veterans service will be held at 7 p.m. today in Foster Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends until 8 p.m.
