Three firefighters were overcome while battling a woods fire that burned about 30 acres of brush and seedlings in southwest Suffolk on Sunday, authorities said.
The firemen were treated for heat exhaustion and cramps at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, then released, Sunday. They were Joshua Gardner, 21, of the Holland Volunteer Fire Department; and Joey D. Lane, 19, and Don Davis, 33, of the Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department.
The fire, on Union Camp Corp. property off Ellis Road, is under investigation by the fire marshal. The cause has not been determined.
A passer-by spotted smoke and drove down a logging road to investigate, then returned to a house to report the fire about 5 p.m.
About 50 volunteers battled the blaze for six hours.
