CELEBRITIES RAISE $17,000 IN TIPS WELL-KNOWN LOCAL PEOPLE WAITED ON TABLES TO RAISE FUNDS TO HELP PREVENT CHILD ABUSE.

Local celebrities who donned aprons and waited tables last month raised more than $17,000 in tips for the Hampton Roads Committee to Prevent Child Abuse.

Eight area restaurants participated in the 13th annual Celebrity Night. That's one less restaurant than last year, but the organization still met the goal, said Betty Wade Coyle, executive director.

``In 1993 we only raised $12,000,'' she said. ``Last year we raised $19,000 but we had an extra restaurant.''

The money raised is used for child abuse prevention through public awareness, parenting support groups and educational materials for parents and professionals. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
