Churning waves, golden grains of sand and a beach house were among the topics of 2,000 entries submitted for the 1995 Maritime Poetry Contest, sponsored by the Life-Saving Museum of Virginia.
Entries, which had to follow a maritime theme, were solicited in December from area schools.
The 30 finalists, juried from 400 poems, were judged by Bentley Anderson and Shirley Hurd, both active in local theater.
More than 150 people attended a reading of the poems at a program at the Central Library recently.
First-, second- and third-place awards were given for five categories - grades two and three; four and five; six, seven and eight; nine and 10; and 11 to 12.
First-place winners received $100 savings bonds.
The winners were:
Grades two and three: Patrick Brunick, first place, Trantwood; Brenda L. Donegan, second place, Hermitage; Luke Buddles, third place, Luxford; honorable mention, Brittany Folck, Linkhorn Park; Lauren Godwin, Linkhorn Park; Nicholas Tersigni, Trantwood; and Brandon Ritzo, Trantwood.
Grades four and five: Christina Crystal Johnson, first place, Red Mill; Nicole Gabrielle Cameron, second place, Red Mill; Ashley Matthews, third place, Salem; honorable mention: Paige Harrison, Norfolk Academy; and Kaitlin Aardahl, Red Mill.
Middle schools: Jamie Lewis, first place, Norfolk Collegiate; Rose Stella, second place, Norfolk Collegiate; Kara Gram, third place, Independence; honorable mention, Martine Anderson, Independence Middle School; Daniel Pellegrino, Norfolk Collegiate; Rochelle Laderberg, Norfolk Collegiate; Jessica Bowman, Norfolk Collegiate; and Jason Shank, Princess Anne.
Grades nine and 10: Sarah Case, first place, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy; Shay Mocnik, second place, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy; Ashley Grondin, third place, Norfolk Collegiate School; honorable mention, Jonathan Duman, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy; Ricky Anderson, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy; Sidney Hazelwood, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy; and Chuck Beuttel, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
