WILLIAMSBURG'S WTPG-FM HIRES PAT MURPHY IN A DUAL CAPACITY

Pat Murphy didn't take long to find a new gig.

The outspoken talk-radio veteran, who was dropped by WTAR-AM in Norfolk on April 12, will join WTPG-FM in Williamsburg Monday in a dual role: as station manager and co-host of its morning show.

WTPG, which bills itself as ``Sunny Country,'' is at 107.9 on the dial. Its broadcast area ranges from Newport News to Richmond but can be picked up sporadically in parts of South Hampton Roads.

Murphy, 45, will share the microphone with Jerry Lee Scott as part of the ``Crazy Shop,'' a mix of country music, talk and news, sports and weather airing Monday through Friday from 6 to 10 a.m. WTPG signed on in July 1993.

The new job will be a change of pace for Murphy, whose jabs at the political left and local politicians attracted a loyal morning audience during his 22 months at WTAR.

Citing financial reasons, his bosses told Murphy he was being dropped to make room for a syndicated show out of New York hosted by Don Imus. The dismissal left the station without a local talk-radio program. ILLUSTRATION: Murphy by CNB
