The search for a helicopter pilot lost in a crash Monday night was called off Tuesday after darkness forced divers from the Chickahominy River.
Dive teams from the Virginia State Police and the James City County Police were to resume looking for David A. Hawley, 48, this morning, said state police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame.
Hawley and his wife, 49-year-old Carol M. Hawley, crashed into the river at about 9:30 p.m. Monday while trying to land their lightweight helicopter on a landing pad at their home on the Chickahominy in Cypress Point, west of Williamsburg.
Carol Hawley was rescued by a private boater. She was not injured.
Divers found the wreckage of the aircraft in the water, about 400 yards from the landing pad, police said.
Van Dame said the helicopter would be raised sometime this afternoon.
Hawley had owned the R-22 model Robinson helicopter for less than a month, said Lorraine Carra, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The R-22, a two-seat craft, requires special training, and Hawley had received the instruction, Carra said.
She said she thought the additional training became a requirement after pilots reported difficulties handling the helicopter, but she did not know anything further.
