State Rep. Robin Hayes said Tuesday that he will form a campaign committee this year to organize and finance a run for governor.
Hayes, R-Cabarrus, is a social, fiscal and religious conservative whose district includes Concord and Kannapolis. He is a textile executive whose family wealth stems from the Cannon textile fortune.
He said he expects to compete with Charlotte Mayor Richard Vinroot for the GOP nod.
``My appeal will be to the conservative wing of the party and he will appeal to the moderate wing of the party,'' Hayes said.
Asked what issues separate GOP conservatives from moderates, Hayes said the list would include taxpayer funding of abortions and parental notification before abortions.
Hayes pointed to South Carolina Gov. David Beasley, elected last year with the support of the Christian Coalition, as sharing his vision for action.
``Our problem's not money; our problem's morality,'' Hayes quoted Beasley as saying.
Hayes added: ``We don't need new ideas; we need old ideals.''
Hayes said he discussed his campaign plans with his family this weekend and an Atlanta political consultant. He said he will start work on his quest for the Republican nomination after the General Assembly quits work for the year this summer. by CNB
