The N.C. Senate has passed Gov. James B. Hunt Jr.'s proposal to require yearlong suspensions for students who carry firearms on school campuses.
The measure would require that any student who takes a firearm onto a school campus be automatically suspended for one year. Students suspended would then be considered on a case-by-case basis for alternative schools or educational boot camps.
The bill, introduced by Sen. Roy Cooper of Rocky Mount, now moves to the House.
Hunt also is working to boost alternative school programs and start educational boot camps to provide an alternative learning environment for students who are expelled, suspended or who can't learn in regular school settings.
This year, the Governor's Crime Commission awarded more than $3 million in federal money for school resource officers to patrol school hallways. by CNB
